Vlog: 14 Facts About Monarch Butterflies

Synopsis: While down in the Ozarks shooting a story about prescribed fires, this group of students were collecting and tagging Monarch butterflies as part of the University of Kansas’ Monarch Watch program. I thought it would be fun to have the kids tell me one thing I wouldn’t know about Monarchs.

Monarch Butterflies Tagged for Trip South

Synopsis: My first segment from my recent trip to Arkansas to cover the Fire Learning Network - a collaboration between state and federal agencies and private groups to reintroduce prescribed burning into the Ozark Mountains.
I spent a good deal of the trip covering the FLN, but one afternoon a group of 4th graders came out […]

Podcasts!

So I work on some podcasts, well, namely the Discovery News Friday News Feedbag, where Will Johnson, James Williams and myself bring you the best of week’s strange science, bold breakthroughs and off-the-wall discoveries. Or something like that. The other podcast is just another way to download some of the videos we do for Discovery […]

Star Wars, nothing but Star Waaaars!

Explanation: This is a multimedia presentation I worked on right at the Arizona Daily Star before the release of Revenge of the Sith. None of the back-end programming was done by me, but I assisted on the design and concept, as well as on the content. It’s really well-designed and slick (thanks to Kerry Dinsmore), […]

The Skinny on What’s Down the Drain

Synopsis: This was shot back in August ‘07 at the Easton Wastewater Treatment Facility on Maryland’s Eastern Shore (noticing a theme here?). With one of our Z1Us on the fritz and another on a shoot, I was had to dig down and use an older Canon SD to shoot this. The results were ok, but […]

Wye House series

This is a series I did from the Wye House archaeological dig near Easton, Maryland. University of Maryland researchers had spent three years on this site - a former slave village that was once the childhood home of abolitionist Frederick Douglass. I edited two segments on the dig, plus a more casual “Cool Jobs” feature […]

Zoo Logic!

Here are the first three episodes of a series I’m doing from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo called “Zoo Logic.” For each segment, we’ll highlight an animal that may not be on the top of everyone’s list of “must-see” animals when they visit the zoo. Basically, no pandas. Thanks to my colleague Kasey-Dee Gardner for helping […]

Ivory-billed Woodpecker Series

Explanation: This is a series I did for Discovery News documenting the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology’s search for the elusive, at best - or extinct, at worst - Ivory-billed Woodpecker. I was only down in the bayou for two days, but they were long days, and I got enough footage for 4 segments, which […]

Scientists Use New Tool To Control Deer

Synopsis: This was really one of my first pieces where I went out in the field and shot with my subjects.

Blurb: Researchers are testing a new contraceptive vaccine as a means to control a white-tailed deer population that is devastating yards, farms and forests. Jorge Ribas tags along.
Explanation: This is one of my earlier […]
