News

Synopsis: The main story I did with the Maryland State Highway Administration’s archaeology team.

Synopsis: An interesting new way to look at our planet. I interviewed one of the study’s co-authors.

Synopsis: Editing this piece was tough - only because I found myself having deja vu to some of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker footage I shot (there’s only so many shots from a boat you can take). But, both Chris Davidson and Bill Posey knew exactly what they were talking about, so their quotes were concise and sharp, which helped make a complicated story easier to grasp. Plus, who doesn’t love names like ‘winged mapleleaf’ and ‘pink mucket?’

Synopsis: Discovery News team on location! I think this may be the first segment the three of us (Kasey-Dee Gardner, James Williams, myself) have done together. We hit the Mall in Washington, D.C. for the Solar Decathlon.

Synposis: I read a press release yesterday regarding this carbon nanotube radio device and thought it would make a cool story. Also, they had video - so there was no need for me to jet to UC-Irvine on a moments notice (not that I would have had the opportunity to). In any case, I think the segment came out OK for what it is - just a quick story on a neat invention that has a ton of future possibilities. I hadn’t done a phone interview in a long time, and it’s definitely different, so I was a little rusty.

Synopsis: A pretty straight news segment on some research going on at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Probably one of the faster turnarounds I’ve done on shooting, producing and editing a piece - since I shot on Thursday morning, came back and logged the video that afternoon and edited and published it on Friday.

Synopsis: My first segment covering prescribed fires in the Arkansas prairies. The second will deal more with the “how” of the operation, which, by the way, was pretty awesome to watch first-hand.

Synopsis: My first segment from my recent trip to Arkansas to cover the Fire Learning Network - a collaboration between state and federal agencies and private groups to reintroduce prescribed burning into the Ozark Mountains.

I spent a good deal of the trip covering the FLN, but one afternoon a group of 4th graders came out to the mountain to conduct Monarch butterfly tagging as part of the University of Kansas’ Monarch Watch program.

More videos to follow soon!

Synopsis: This was really one of my first pieces where I went out in the field and shot with my subjects.

Blurb: Researchers are testing a new contraceptive vaccine as a means to control a white-tailed deer population that is devastating yards, farms and forests. Jorge Ribas tags along.

Explanation: This is one of my earlier segments for Discovery News. I’m pleased with the results though in retrospect, it could have used some more editing. A shot of the deer actually being darted would have been nice as well.
