Series

Synopsis: With mouthfuls of mealworms, this family of Golden Lion Tamarins work for their food. Jorge Ribas hangs out with these curious monkeys.

Synopsis: Scary lil’ bugger! I was watching the beginning of Psycho on youtube and got inspired, so I played with the music and transitions to come up with a Hitchcockian (did I just make that up?) feel for the segment.

Happy Pheas… er, Turkey Day!

Synopsis: Maybe less a “cool jobs” than a “gross jobs” or even, dare I say it, “dirty jobs.” Still, what these guys do is pretty cool, and it was fun jumping in the river with them. On the shots with the two guys in the water, I brought out a lav mic into the river with me and held it over my head, while interviewing them. I managed to keep the mic dry but had to bump the audio quite a bit, hence all the loud insect noise.

I don’t know how I’d react to finding one of these things in my bathroom. Sometimes you have to be thankful you don’t live in the rainforest.

Synopsis: Zoo Logic returns! Well, it never really went away, but was on a short hiatus while I reported on some other stories. But I made it back to the National Zoo earlier this week and filmed a bunch of new animals. So sit back, grab a hot cup of Red Bull and enjoy!

Synopsis: My last segment from the prairie - this one is part of our “The Skinny on…” series that we feature on our site. The video focuses more on the ‘how’ these prescribed burns are done, rather than the ‘why,’ which I highlighted in an earlier segment. I guess I could have combined them into one video, but with all this great b-roll, I didn’t want to have to cut it down too much.

Synopsis: My second prairie segment. A Cool Jobs on Mike Melnechuk, who was burn boss that day. I always enjoy segments where I don’t have to track any audio. Maybe it’s because I find my own voice kinda irritating. Or maybe it’s always nicer to have the subject tell the story. Also, is there a cooler job description than “burn boss?”

Synopsis: Here’s the latest in my Zoo Logic series. It’s about flamingos. They’re pink. And mean, apparently.

Synopsis: This was shot back in August ‘07 at the Easton Wastewater Treatment Facility on Maryland’s Eastern Shore (noticing a theme here?). With one of our Z1Us on the fritz and another on a shoot, I was had to dig down and use an older Canon SD to shoot this. The results were ok, but you can tell that I was uncomfortable with the camera. Plus the audio kind of stinks. Still, it was a neat piece to shoot and edit as part of our ongoing “The Skinny On…” series (like “How Things Work”).
